Not all berries that are blue are created equal. For Biotta Wild bilberry we use only hand-picked, wild grown forest bilberries, prized for their intense flavour. What makes them so special?

Bilberries belong to the heather family and grow wild in forests and moors in Northern and Central Europe. They cannot be harvested mechanically but must be carefully picked by hand, making them even more valuable. In contrast to the cultivated North American blueberry, which is several times larger and has light-coloured flesh, wild bilberries are dark blue through and through. The rich colouring is the result of plant pigments called anthocyanins, which are abundant in the skin and flesh of wild bilberries. In cultivated blueberries, these pigments are only present in the skin and thus lower in quantity.
Blue berries for health
Anthocyanins have beneficial effects on the human body. Studies have demonstrated their anti-inflammatory properties, an advantage in warding off bacteria and viruses. And scientists believe that anthocyanins can make a major contribution to protecting the blood vessels, thus aiding the cardiovascular system. This effect is evidently partly due to how anthocyanins help to balance cholesterol levels.
Blueberries and especially the concentrated wild bilberries with their fruity berry flavour are a delicious treat any day. All the better that they’re also so good for us! Outside of berry season, juice is the ideal way to enjoy them. But always reach for directly pressed juice in organic quality, which has been proven to contain more phytonutrients.
