Blackcurrants – known as cassis in French – are often prized as juice due to their typical tart-bitter taste. What benefits are slumbering in a sip of blackcurrant juice?

- Rich in natural vitamin C
- Boosts the immune system
- Beneficial phytonutrients

Blackcurrants belong to the gooseberry family. They grow as a deciduous shrub mainly in Central and Eastern Europe and in North Asia. In comparison to their “sister”, the redcurrant, blackcurrants contain almost five times as much vitamin C (approx. 177mg/100g). Vitamin C protects the body against bacteria and viruses and contributes to normal energy metabolism. Since the body cannot produce vitamin C on its own, it needs to be supplied through food. And vitamin C cannot be stored, so a continuous intake is necessary, for example through a daily glass of juice. But always check the packaging for guaranteed vitamin C content.

Blackcurrant for colds

Among the natural substances found in blackcurrants are phytonutrients known as anthocyanins. Phytonutrients give a fruit or vegetable its colour and flavour, but are also of vital importance for the human organism. A study published in 2004 in the Journal of International Medical Research demonstrated that anthocyanins found in blackcurrants have an antiviral effect. This means that they help the body to defend itself against possible pathogens and can support the immune system in fighting off a cold or flu.

Along with its preventive function, Biotta Cassis is also simply a delicious beery juice that is ideal, for example, as a fruity summer spritzer or for enhancing a dessert.
